Ponyboy wakes up in the afternoon, not sure where he is. All of his memories come flooding back, and he then remembers the events of the previous night. Johnny is gone, and Pony finda a note written in the dust on the floor that says Johnny went to get supplies. Later, Johnny returns with food, a book, cards, cigarettes, and peroxide. Pony dyes his hair, and they both cut it reluctantly. They cry themselves to sleep that night, suddenly aware of how horrible the two days had been. Johnny and Ponyboy spend the days reading and analyzing Gone With the Wind. By the fifth day, Pony is tired of bologna, and resorts to smoking cigarettes. He gets sick, and as he's trying to sleep it off, Dally finally pays them a visit. He tells the two that he had the cops thinking that they were in Texas, that Soda left Pony a note, and that there was a fighht goign down between the greasers and the socs. They head to Dairy Queen for lunch, and Dally reveals that Cherry Valance is a spy for the greasers.
"I half convinced myself that I had dreamed everything that had happened the night before. I'm really home in bed, I thought." Pony thinks this just after he wakes up from the first night of sleep in the abandoned church. The events of the night before were so unreal that they seemed like a distant memory, or a dream. He woke up confused as to where he was, and almost convinced that none of the events actually occured. He wanted to go back to sleep, as if he was in his own bed, safe and sound with no worries.
