After Dally leaves, Johnny doesn't have a ride home, so he walks around aimlessly, trying to convince himself that Johnny isn't dead. He gets a ride home from a young man and when he arrives, he is not in a good state. His friends and family are there, and they are worried, but then they get a call from Dally saying that he is in trouble and the cops are chasing him after he robbed a store. They run to the vacant lot, where he says to meet him, and the cops are close behind. He pulls out a gun that isn't loaded, but the cops shoot because they didn't know. Pony realizes that Dally wanted to die because Johnny, the only person he loved, is dead. Then, Pony really doesn't feel well. He sleeps for 3 days, and was even admitted to the hospital. He had a concussion from the rumble, and hasn't eaten much. Darry and Soda were worried, and they say he asked for them, their parents, and Johnny. Pony is owrried about missing track and school, and then falls back asleep with Soda.
"Is Darry sorry I'm sick?" Pony asks Soda this when he first wakes up. He probably wants to see if darry cares, and Soda tells him that he does. He grew up thinking Darry didn't love him, but only recently did he learn that Darry only wanted the best for him. He cared about Pony maybe more than anyone else in the world. By saying this, it shows that Pony is still unsure of Darry's love for him.

Pony arrive shom late, with only 30 minutes to go before the rumble. He takes 5 painkillers because he has a headache, and also usually takes them before he goes to sleep. The Socs and the Greasers have a rumble. They agree to use only fists and no weapons. Pony's gang, Tim Shepard's, and a gang from Brumly are all there. The Socs and Greasers fight, and the Greasers win. Dally takes Buck Merrills' T-Bird to the hospital, and Pony joins them. They are speeding, and get puled over by a cop, but they tell him that they're taking Pony to the hospital for a motorcycle accident, and the police car escorted them to the hospital. They saw Johnny, and he looks bad. The doctor says that he's dying. Dally says he's pround, and in doing so, grants Johnny's dying wish. Johnny's last words to Pony were "stay gold"
"I'd hate to see the day when I had to get my nerve from a can." Pony wants to avoid drinking, like Cherry. He doesn't want to turn to alchohol to be brave, because it can easily turn bad. He doesn't like seeing Two-Bit drinking before the rumble. He wants to believe that his reasons for drinking are complicated, though. Pony and Two-Bit go to visit Johnny and Dally in the hospital. At first the nurse doesn't let them in, but then the doctor realizes that they are basically his only family. He asks Pony for a copy of gone with the wind, and Pony sends Two-Bit to get it. While Two-Bit is away, Johnny admits to Pony that he is scared of dying young, and Pony tells him that he won't die. Then, Johhny's mom comes to visit Pony, but he says that he doesn't want to see her and passes out. Two-Bit returns, but he can't see Johnny, so he and Pony visit Dally. The two see Johnny's mother in the hallway yelling at the nurse, saying that she should be able to see her son. She yells at Two-Bit and Pony, saying that it's their fault, and Pony thinks that it will kill Johnny so see his mother. Dallas says he's happy that he didn't kill Pony why he hit his back. Two-Bit notices that Pony doesn't feel well, but doesn't say anything to Darry because he knows that Pony won't be allowed to go to the rumble. They both agree that Darry is stricter than most actual parents and that he could be a Soc. Later on, they see Cherry and she says that the socs aren't bringing weapons to the rumble. Pony asks her to visit Johnny, but she says she can't face Bob's killer, and he is upset.
"I would, I would help her and Randy both if I could. "Hey," I said suddenly, "can you see the sunset real good from the West Side?" After Pony gets mad at Cherry, he forgives her because he notices that she is on the verge of tears. This is what he says to show that he is not longer mad at her. When they first met, they talked about their interests, and she said that most of her friends didn't appreciate sunsets like she did. He said that he also likes sunsets, and that it was something they had in common even though they were from different sides of the tracks. At the hospital, the reporters and police men bombard the boys with questions. Darry tells them to backoff, and Soda makes them all laugh by joking aorund. Later on, the boys find out that Johnny is in critical condition, and might not live. Pony is very tired and falls asleep in the car. Darry carries him inside. The next morning, he wakes up first and prepares a meal for the other two boys. Two-Bit and Steve come over, and Two-Bit is very happy to see Ponyboy. They show Pony a newspaper article about Johnny and Pony that describes them as heroes. The paper implies that Soda, Darry, and Pony might be split up and that Pony will have to go to court charged with manslaughter. Pony tells Darry that he had a nightmare that he can't remember, like he had the night before his parents died, and Darry is worried. Then, Pony meets Randy in down after he follows him with his blue Mustang. They talk for a while and Pony learns that even the socs have real problems too.
"He's just a guy. He just wanted to talk" This shows that Pony realized that the socs don't have it easy, either. They have different problems, they have problems all the same. They are cool on the exterior, but liek the greasers, it's just a facade. Randy tells pony about how Bob's parents never said no, and how they made him the way he was. If he had boundaries, he might not be dead. Randy doesn't think he could be a hero like Pony, but Pony assures him that he would have made the same decision. Pony and Johnny are amazed that the spy is Cherry Valance. She was around the day Two-Bit got jumped and said that she felt like it was her fault that they were at war. She spied for them to help the greasers out of the mess. Dally takes the boys back to the church, only to see that it was on fire. Johnny and Pony decide to save the children trapped inside, even risking their lives to do so. They are both injured, but everyone makes it out ok. Dally hits Pony across the back to put out a fire that was on his jacket, and Pony passes out. When he wakes up, he's in an ambulance and a man in there relays the events of the story to him. He reveals that Dally has some burns, but Johnny was seriously injured. Darry and Soda visit Pony in the hospital, anxious but relieved that he is ok. Darry breaks down in tears, and Ponyboy relaizes that Darry really does love him.
"I hadn't realized Johnny was right behind me all the way." Johnny was usually timid and shy, but when he went into the church that day, Pony saw a new side of him. This Johnny was brave ans strong, willing to risk his life for the sake of others'. He wasn't worried and didn't have the puppy-dog look in his eyes anymore. He wanted to do what was right and become a hero, like his idol, Dally. Ponyboy wakes up in the afternoon, not sure where he is. All of his memories come flooding back, and he then remembers the events of the previous night. Johnny is gone, and Pony finda a note written in the dust on the floor that says Johnny went to get supplies. Later, Johnny returns with food, a book, cards, cigarettes, and peroxide. Pony dyes his hair, and they both cut it reluctantly. They cry themselves to sleep that night, suddenly aware of how horrible the two days had been. Johnny and Ponyboy spend the days reading and analyzing Gone With the Wind. By the fifth day, Pony is tired of bologna, and resorts to smoking cigarettes. He gets sick, and as he's trying to sleep it off, Dally finally pays them a visit. He tells the two that he had the cops thinking that they were in Texas, that Soda left Pony a note, and that there was a fighht goign down between the greasers and the socs. They head to Dairy Queen for lunch, and Dally reveals that Cherry Valance is a spy for the greasers.
"I half convinced myself that I had dreamed everything that had happened the night before. I'm really home in bed, I thought." Pony thinks this just after he wakes up from the first night of sleep in the abandoned church. The events of the night before were so unreal that they seemed like a distant memory, or a dream. He woke up confused as to where he was, and almost convinced that none of the events actually occured. He wanted to go back to sleep, as if he was in his own bed, safe and sound with no worries. Johnny and Ponyboy decided to walk to the park to cool off and calm down. While they're there, Bob and Randy's friends show up, ready for a fight. They try to drown Pony, and Johnny pulls out his switchblade and stabs the one holding Pony. The rest of them ran away after their friend was hurt. Pony and Johnny ran to Buck Merill's house, where they could find Dally. They thought he could help them. He got Pony some dry clothes, gave them some money, and a gun. He told them to get on the train to Windrixville and stay in the abandoned church up there. He told them to buy food for a week and that there was a water pump safe for drinking. Dally said he would be back when he felt it was safe.
"I had to. They were drowning you Pony. They might have killed you. And they had a blade… They were gonna beat me up." Johnny explains why he stabbed the soc. He was afraid and he knew that they would kill Pony and himself. Johnny always carried a switchblade with him after he wa sbeat up the first time, and promised to himself that he would use it if he needed to. After he stabbed the soc, he immediately regretted it, but knew that he had to do it. After the movie, Cherry and Marcia realize that since their boyfirends drove off, they don't have a ride home. They agree to let Two-Bit drive them home. While they are walking to the car, they get jumped by Cherry and Marcia's boyfrieds, Randy and Bob, and their friends. The boys are ready to fight, but Cherry and Marcia get into the car and the socs peacefully drive away. Later on, Pony and Johnny are watching the stars in a vacant lot. The two both fall asleep and wake up hours later. Pony realizes that he broke curfew by hours, and returns home to a sleeping Soda and a very angry Darry. Darry yells at Pony, and things escalate to the point where Darry hits Pony. Pony is shocked and upset and runs back to the vacant lot and finds Johnny. The two run for a few blocks, then sit down and have a cigarette. They decide to walk for a few blocks, and then back and hopefully by then Pony will cool down enough to go home.
"Suddenly it was deathly quiet. We had all frozen. Nobody in my family had ever hit me. Nobody." This quote stands out because it shows that when Darry had hit pony, it was the first time. Pony was shocked and confused. This incident is the reason that he ran away, and the beginning of where his problems start. Thi shows that Darry's actions were completely unexpected and provides an explanation for Pony's choice to run away. Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy all sneak to the Nightly Double at the drive-in at the beginning of chapter two. Dally notices some soc girls and does his best to annoy them, but Johnny makes him stop, so Dally leaves. The girls introduce themselves as Marcia and Cherry, and both are very pretty. They talk for a while, and two-bit joins them. He hits it off with Marcia because they share the same sense of humor. Pony gets drinks with Cherry, and he tells her the story of when Johnny got jumped by a group of socs. Cherry tells him that everyone has problems, even the socs.
"Things are rough all over" Cherry says this to Ponyboy when they first meet after he tells her the story of when Johnny got beat up by socs. She says that although people think that the socs have it easy because they have money, things aren't perfect. Everyone has problems. At the beginning of chapter 1, we are introduced to the main character, Ponyboy. He is walking out of a movie theater alone. Just as he was thinking about how his frind Johnny got jumped by a group of socs (socials), Ponyboy was attacked. His brothers, Darry and Sodapop come to his rescue and the rest of their gang chases the socs away. Ponyboy tells us about the socs, rich, upper-class kids who wear madras and drive fancy cars. He also tells us about each of his family and friends. Sodapop is movie-star handsome, and he understands everyone, and always has a grin on his face. Darry, Ponyboy's oldest brother, is a hard worker with a serious attitude, a stark contrast of his other brother. We are also introduced to Dally, Two-Bit, Johnny, and Steve, members of Ponyboy's gang.
"Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us only get to stay together only as long as we behave. So Soda and I stay out of trouble as much as we can" Ponyboy's parents were killed in an auto wreck when he was younger. His brothers, Sodapop and Darry, make sure that he stays out of trouble. They act as his parents and push him to work hard in school and outside of school. Unlike other greasers, Soda and Pony don't drink or do illegal things because they want to stay together and will be separated if either shows that they are not behaving well. |
