The fifth person Eddie meets in heaven is a Filipino girl named Tala. She is the child that he saw running in the burning building when he was a soldier. Eddie couldn't handle the thought of killing a young child, so he ran into the building and tried to save her before she was seriously injured or died. This had a big effect on the rest of his life because he had to deal with the pain of being shot in the leg until he died. The only reason he was shot in the leg is because he was in that building trying frantically to save her, not even knowing whether or not there was someone actually in that building. In heaven, she teaches him that he did have a purpose on earth and that he didn't waste his life at all. In fact, he saved many others' lives even if he couldn't save hers. Eddie's hard work as the head of maintenance kept the rides safe for the hundreds of children that rode on them every day. He made sure that they were all up to par, and even in his last moments on earth, he saved a young girl by pushing her out of the way of a falling ride part. I think his final lesson was the most important one because he lived so long feeling like he was worthless, and for someone to show him that he was actually a hero, that must have meant a lot.
