The fifth person Eddie meets in heaven is a Filipino girl named Tala. She is the child that he saw running in the burning building when he was a soldier. Eddie couldn't handle the thought of killing a young child, so he ran into the building and tried to save her before she was seriously injured or died. This had a big effect on the rest of his life because he had to deal with the pain of being shot in the leg until he died. The only reason he was shot in the leg is because he was in that building trying frantically to save her, not even knowing whether or not there was someone actually in that building. In heaven, she teaches him that he did have a purpose on earth and that he didn't waste his life at all. In fact, he saved many others' lives even if he couldn't save hers. Eddie's hard work as the head of maintenance kept the rides safe for the hundreds of children that rode on them every day. He made sure that they were all up to par, and even in his last moments on earth, he saved a young girl by pushing her out of the way of a falling ride part. I think his final lesson was the most important one because he lived so long feeling like he was worthless, and for someone to show him that he was actually a hero, that must have meant a lot.

The fifth person Eddie meets in Heaven is his late wife, Marguerite. She died when she was 47, and he'd missed her ever since. He was completely shocked when he saw her again after decades of missing her. Eddie couldn't believe that he was finally seeing her again, and didn't ever want this time with her to end.His love for her didn't fade when she died, and he never wanted to love anyone else after she passed away. Marguerite taught him that although people die, love never does, just like Eddie's love for her. He felt so angry about her death, he felt that she was snatched away before he could fully live and love with her, and before she could fulfill her life and goals. She tells him not to be angry, that memory strengthens when you can no longer make new ones. He loved her so much, and when she died, he remained faithful and loving, so much that she could feel it in Heaven.
The Third person that Eddie meets in Heaven is Ruby, the woman that Ruby Pier was named after. At first, he had no idea who he was, and was confused as to why she was the third person that he met in heaven, because he can't remember ever meeting her. She then explains that Ruby Pier was built for her by her husband, and without her his entire life would have been different. Ruby shows him vision of his father and his mother and Mickey Shea, giving him an explanation for his father's behavior. Eddie learns something about his dad inn that moment, something that he'd never seen before, loyalty. He forgave Mickey and saved him from drowning because he was drunk. Eddie forgives his father and lets go of the anger he'd held on to for so long.
