Each of these excerpts from The 5 People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom shows a different aspect of war or the affect that it had on Eddie. All of these had a major impact on Eddie as a person, and changed him forever. When his friend died, he only thought of escape before he reached the same fate. He had lost all hope, and even forced Captain to shoot him in the leg because he had no other ideas on how to bring Eddie to his senses. The war taught him the brutalities of life that he wouldn't experience anywhere else. Being held captive for six months with little to no food to eat, forced to mine coal all day, and then seeing someone that close to you die changed Eddie in irreversible ways.
