George and Lennie arrive at the ranch and settle into their bunk house. The first person they meet is Candy, who has a missing hand. Then they meet the boss, who is upset that they arrived a day late. The boss is suspicious of George and Lennie's relationship, and thinks George is taking advantage of Lennie. George lies and says that they are cousins and that Lennie got kicked in the head by a horse when he was younger as an excuse for his actions. Then they meet the boss' son, Curly. He is small and tries to pick fights with bigger guys. He married a beautiful lady who is not faithful to him. She has eyes for everyone else and this also makes Lennie a target for Curly. We also meet Slim, the best worker in the ranch who raises puppies, and Carlson.
"Well - she got the eye" Curly's wife isn't faithful to him but he's obsessed with her. He'd kill anyone who even looks at her, but she doesn't make it easy for the men. She isn't happy with Curly and doesn't approve of many of the things he does, which the men suspect is in an effort to impress her.

In Chapter 1, we are introduced to Lennie and George, the main characters. We are given a description of them and learn quickly what their relationship to each other is. Lennie is tall and burly, and George is short and thin. What is odd about these two is that Lennie seems to rely on George, almost as if he was a child or a pet. Lennie seems unable to function on his own, and he is the reason that the pair had to flee Weed, where they used to work and live. Lennie likes to pet mice, but as soon as they bite him, he kills them with a pinch of his fingers. "[He] walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, way a bear drags his paws. His arms did not swing at his sides, but hung loosely."
This is one of the many times that Lennie is compared to an animal based on his characteristics. He seems to behave, think, and speak as an animal does. This is probably why he relies on George so heavily. |
