In Chapter 1, we are introduced to Lennie and George, the main characters. We are given a description of them and learn quickly what their relationship to each other is. Lennie is tall and burly, and George is short and thin. What is odd about these two is that Lennie seems to rely on George, almost as if he was a child or a pet. Lennie seems unable to function on his own, and he is the reason that the pair had to flee Weed, where they used to work and live. Lennie likes to pet mice, but as soon as they bite him, he kills them with a pinch of his fingers. "[He] walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, way a bear drags his paws. His arms did not swing at his sides, but hung loosely."
This is one of the many times that Lennie is compared to an animal based on his characteristics. He seems to behave, think, and speak as an animal does. This is probably why he relies on George so heavily.
