SummaryThe scene is dark, as everything focuses on Mr. Frank. He is packing up his belongings and burning the things that are constant reminders of what took place in the house. Miep, a pregnant woman, his secretary/helper then finds something valuable. She gives him the leather book, Anne’s diary. As he begins to read in the scene shifts back in time. The Van Daans are waiting for the Franks to arrive worried that something might have happened to them. Mr. Franks gets to the hiding place and explains that they had to take an alternate route. He introduces his family, Mrs. Frank, Margot and Anne. Margot and Anne are his daughter, ages 18 and 13. The Van Daan family consists of Mr. Van Daan, Mrs. Van Daan, and their shy son Peter, who is 15. Both family start taking off their layers, because suitcases would be too suspicious. Mr. Frank tells them that there will be workers below them form 8 in the morning to 6 at night so everyone must be quiet during those times. Anne, being outgoing, starts conversing with Peter. It is quickly learned that they are very different. Peter is shy and usually on his own while Anne is spirited and social. Mr. Frank got Anne a diary to make her time in hiding more enjoyable and she begins writing in it as soon as possible. “Im sort of a lone wolf”When Peter says this it is his own way of saying he doesn't have many friends. He is a lot less social than Anne and because of this he doesn't have anyone to interact with at school. Anne has no idea why he wouldn't just go over to her, but what she doesn't understand is that it is different for him. She is comfortable with making new friends, but he is awkward and shy. He would never have the courage to just wake up to a group of people he doesn't know. THis says a lot about their major differences in character.
